The Wii audience will be over the fad by then. Like I said, many a Wii is already sitting unused in the closet. Yeah and then the Wii-Wii will come out and it'll start all over again.

Such social space gaming is basically the polar opposite of FPS's (where the guys dominate). It's a big untapped market for consoles, IMHO, and not just a niche as you call it. Women make up more than half the population, and they are generally much more interested in social spaces than another blow-em-up FPS. The only console that has tapped into them at all has been the Wii. Again, why would anyone spend $400 on a console just to access some social network site? Gamers aren't going to care because they're going to be more interested in using the console to play games - which for many is their idea of being social.  Social gamers aren't going to care because their $400 laptop already handles these sorts of things just fine, not to mention allows them to have Facebook, MySpace, Skype, and any number of IM clients running at the same time on the same screen while still allowing them to leave the TV on in the background? It's just not going to happen.  There just isn't going to be enough of an audience willing to make the jump.

Not a good analogy, MMO*s are a completely different dog that what is a typical FPS'. How so?  FPS' have made the jump to consoles, despite having a largely simplified interface (controller vs. keyboard) and arguably have gone on to much larger sales than similar games on the PC. Both the PS3 and 360 have chat-pad attachments, which can be used for in-game texting.  It wouldn't be quite the same as playing a game on the PC, but just as with FPS _title_s...people will adjust to the new control scheme, and even excel. There's no reason MMO's couldn't make the jump and in fact, I think they'll be the next big genre to make the leap from PCs to consoles. MMOs in general could work on a video game console. Sony is readying their Massive Action Game that should be a hit. MMORPGs are the specific games I don't think will make a big splash on the video game console industry because they don't appeal to the typical high end console gamer. To spend all your free time in something like World of Warcraft reeks of nerdiness. Plus, MMORPGers tend to be very invested in and dedicated to one specific game. Just like the type of people who enjoy Second Life are already playing it in the PC world and won't bother with Home, MMORPGers won't shift to the console world unless someone yanks away their existing universe.

2) Blu-ray or a high capacity propietary optical drive (perhaps _base_d on the old HD-DVD spec, if they're too proud to pay Sony)

Mainstream gamers want to race cars and shoot bad guys. They don't want to swing their Elven sword at an orc (yes, I know that's an overgeneralization). It's a whole other mindset in an MMORPG. Have you actually tried WoW?  It's pretty clear that there's quite a few people - many who don't consider themselves hardcore games - willing to go out with some friends and kill some orcs. One of my friends is a World of Warcraft nerd. I saw all I needed to at his place. Oh, and by mainstream gamer, I don't mean someone who, for instance, plays the Wii or Bejeweled.
