With the 360 turning 4 years old this Fall, I think it's definitely time to start thinking about the next console launch (console lifespans have traditionally averaged about 5 years). Barring some sort of new model Xbox 360 1.5 version, I suspect we're looking at a new console in the Fall of 2010 or, more likely, the Fall of 2011. I guarantee it won't happen that quickly. Given the current state of the U.S. and world economies it's simply too expensive to do a new hardware launch. Nobody wants to finance it. Generation 8 will be delayed until 2012 at the earliest, probably more like 2015. If we do get new hardware in 2010 it will be add-on _base_d, like the 1/2 step generation between the Genesis/SNES era and the Saturn/PS era. We had lots of hardware pinned in between there, the Sega CD, 32X, Jaguar, 3DO, etc. Nothing really caught fire. I expect the Natal to be operating at that level. The current generation of hardware doesn't have the longevity to last until 2015. Graphics-wise, we're not going to get much more out of the Xbox 360. It's possible that some developer comes up with a revolutionary new AI system, but the chances of running that with high- end graphics on the Xbox 360 are pretty slim. 2012 is too late in my book but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If Project Natal really takes off, Microsoft may be inclined to just ride that wave for a while like you said. I wouldn't hold my breath for that, though.

this generation, and how many have failed to take advantage of the technology properly.  Hell, Halo 3 took until late 2007 to come out, and the graphics weren't advanced enough to be considered at the cutting edge of next-gen .  I still don't understand why you say a new console generation can't start any later than (2011).  Really, what's going to happen if it starts later?  Gamers will still buy games, and let's face it, the increase in price over the $50 mark means that people need more time to save up to buy games than prior console generations.  Add in the economy continuing to suffer like it hasn't since the days before videogames, and it's clear that following the same 5 years or less life cycle isn't the safe bet it was in the past.  The rules are different now. Throw in the fact that the economy is still in the toilet worldwide. What's the point in introducing a new console when no one can afford it? Better to wait a little longer.  It's not as though any of the consoles have hit the wall as it were. I don't see the next generation of console hardware being any more expensive than it was in 2005 when the Xbox 360 arrived. In fact, console manufacturers will be under more pressure to deliver at a cheaper initial cost - even the 360's $400 starting price tag was a bit ridiculous. Not one sane consumer wanted the price of games to go above the $50 mark- yet it happened anyway at the beginning of this generation.  As we've seen, what consumers want, and what manufacturers and developers are willing to do, are not the same.
