I've been advocating the PS3 to many of my relatives as a relatively cheap and very good Blu-Ray p_layer_. I even sent them _link_s about the $100 Sony_style_ discount... the $100 gift card from Wal-mart... free Blu-Ray offers in the past... Black Friday sales from last year...etc. Not a single one bit because of the negative (in their mind) association with video games. I even told them they never have to buy a single video game and still no bite. A little off-thread curiousity here... have these people picked up a Wii by any chance? That's a very valid question. The answer is a resounding NO. None of these people I refer to are in any way interested in playing video games. They look at video games as children's toys and always will. Ah right. I know a number of people who view games as immature but are very enthusiastic about the Wii. That's in no way hypocritical I'm told.

I have teh ghey. Its not that bad as long as it is not your primary source of entertainment. Its not even my 8 year old son's primary gaming system. He plays his DS, PS2 and Xbox more than the Wii but occasionally he gets the urge for some Mario Kart or Smash Bros or Galaxy or Wii Fit or...... Doggonit, I am starting to get pissed about how much I have put into that doggone Wii not to have that kid play it over my old systems. I should take all that other stuff away and make him play only the Wii. amen. After a few months of heavy use, my wii sits unused by me, my 7 year old, and my 4 year old. I try renting Wii games at blockbuster and they play it for a day and never play it again. The games are either too hard for them, too stupid, or are identical to the games they already played (how many of these wii sports type games can they release?) Some friends came over for the 4th and the kids played bowling, but that's the first time it's really been played in awhile. I bought them both DS's and that is all they do now. The wii was a huge waste of investment for me so far. If my son isn't playing his DS, he's fired up the PS3 to play Lego Star wars for the 5 millionth time. He'd rather play a game he's beaten hundreds of times then play something on the wii at the moment. (I guess to get him to really play it I could buy lego star wars on the wii I was wondering if it's because the wii is upstairs and they just never feel like going up there to play it My experience has been quite different. My nephews (13, 8, 5) and my nieces (8, 5) have very little interest in playing games on my Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, although they don't mind watching every so often. All they ever care about playing is the Wii. They have DS games and like those as well, and they loved the GameCube (and the Nintendo 64 and even my old SNES and NES). When I recently asked which of the 3 gaming systems they'd prefer if they could have one of them for free, all except the oldest said the Wii. The oldest said the PS3 but only because it costs the most money. When I asked which one he'd rather play, he said the Wii. Similarly, of all my friends who aren't diehard gamers, not a single one was interested in owning the PS3 or the Xbox 360 (except for one who was interested in the 360 only because of Top Spin 2). They all LOVE the Wii games, though. Every time I have a gathering, all anyone wants to play is Wii Sports, Wii Play, Super Smash Bros and Smarty Pants... Scratch that... people also like to play Rock Band (I've got the 360 version). ******************************************************** That's the difference.  We are talking about people who actually own the consoles.  You are talking to people who love the idea of the Wii but I have a feeling it is always different when it is the same question posed to an owner.  Do you prefer the Wii since you own all 3?  I have a feeling that the answer is probably the same as ours.  I agree that the idea of the Wii is definitely the most intriguing for those without direct knowledge.

this year. SOCOM is a much bigger game, though. LittleBigPlanet is a good casual _title_. There won't be many people choosing to dedicate weeks to this over strong retail _title_s, though. Even with a small sample, this indicates a major problem in the real world. Of course, you could randomly pick out 12 bad ones, even with the 5% failure rate, but then you could also win the powerball with a single ticket. In short, small samples are VERY telling in production. A sample of 12 defective items with 5% defective rate is extremely rare. Now go learn ya some maths. No learned mathematician will ever tell you that you can extrapolate the results of one small sample of 12 units, random or not, to a larger set more than a million times that size. Yes, you can extrapolate a lot from a small number of units. That is why they call it extrapolation. More stats is better, but a large number of failures from a small number of truely random samples speaks strongly in the industrial world. If you take a single sample from a machine every hour for a day and 50% of your 24 samples is defective, this is a BIG stastic. Not the full story, but far from a garbage statistic.
